New York bassist Ken Filiano and vocalist Andrea Wolper join Charlottesville's own Stephen Nachmanovitch for a workshop in the art of free improvisation. In this friendly, supportive gathering designed to help release the musical creativity inside you, we'll:
• nurture connections among mind, body, voice, instrument
• explore creative communication within interactive, democratic forms
• encourage spontaneous self-expression supported by our innate sense of structure
Vocal and instrumental musicians at all levels are especially invited. But whether you’re a professional musician (any instrument), a music lover, or simply curious; if you want to find more freedom in creative, skillful expression--join us! Come ready to move, make sound, play, sing, and enjoy the shared adventure of improvisation.
Stephen Nachmanovitch performs and teaches internationally as an improvisational violinist, and at the intersections of music, dance, theater, and multimedia arts. He is the author of the classic of contemporary music literature, "Free Play: Improvisation in Life and Art" (Penguin, 1990). Born in 1950, he studied at Harvard and the University of California, where he earned a Ph.D. in the History of Consciousness for an exploration of William Blake. His mentor was the anthropologist and philosopher Gregory Bateson. He has taught and lectured widely in the United States and abroad on creativity and the spiritual underpinnings of art. In the 1970s he was a pioneer in free improvisation on violin, viola and electric violin. He has presented master classes and workshops at many conservatories and universities, and has had numerous appearances on radio, television, and at music and theater festivals. He has collaborated with other artists in media including music, dance, theater, and film, and has developed programs melding art, music, literature, and computer technology. He has published articles in a variety of fields since 1966, and has created computer software including The World Music Menu and Visual Music Tone Painter. He lives with his wife and two sons in Charlottesville, Virginia. He is currently performing, recording, teaching, writing, and obsessed with the improvisational possibilities of the viola d'amore. A very abbreviated list of Ken Filiano's credits in jazz, improvised music, classical music, tango, and interdisciplinary performance includes performance and/or recording with Anthony Braxton, Bobby Bradford, Nels Cline, Connie Crothers, Bill Dixon, Ted Dunbar, Giora Feidman, Vinny Golia, Frank London, Tina Marsh, Dom Minasi, ROVA Saxophone Quartet, Roswell Rudd, Fay Victor, and Pablo Zeigler. His extensive discography includes his solo bass CD, "subvenire" (Nine Winds) and "Dreams From a Clown Car" (Clean Feed), which presents his compositions for his quartet. He has been on the music faculty at Mansfield (PA) University; taught at The New School; been a guiding artist at the Karl Berger-Ingrid Sersto Creative Music Studio; been a guest lecturer working with poets on the art of collaboration and the incorporation of improvisation and intuition into the creative work process at the School of Visual Arts and Hunter College in New York; has taught college-level and post-graduate master classes and workshops at various schools in the United States and abroad; and teaches double bass, music theory, and improvisation in his private studio in New York. A performer-improviser-composer-educator, he believes that both technique and creative imagination need to be continually balanced, nurtured and challenged, and that to create a distinct voice and body of work it’s imperative that the creative vision be the guiding force that defines and expresses one’s uniqueness. “An audacious artist [who] flouts genre limitations... delivering an inventive, thrilling, appealing musical vision," New York-based vocalist and songwriter Andrea Wolper's performance credits include the Blue Note, Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola (Jazz at Lincoln Center), the New York JVC Jazz Festival, and tours in the U.S. and abroad. In addition to leading her own groups, Andrea is part of TranceFormation, an improvising trio with Connie Crothers and Ken Filiano; "TranceFormation in Concert" (New Artists Records) earned a "best vocal CD of the year" in the Downbeat Critics' Poll listings, and was called "an exhilarating sonic image of where jazz (and jazz singing in particular) is located today and hints at the possible routes it might take tomorrow." Andrea is a member of Jay Clayton's “Different Voices" improvising ensemble. Andrea curates the Why Not Experiment? Series at Whynot Jazz Room in New York City. She teaches vocal technique, and has Level II certification in Somatic Voicework™.
